Properly labeling an off-grid PV system is important for safety of users and anyone who may work on the system. Proper labels convey important information about a system (voltages, available current, power sources, location of disconnects, the destination or purpose of a circuit) that can help someone use, maintain, or troubleshoot a system. There are various different labels that should be applied to a PV system, although for small systems and systems where all equipment is located in the same space it often makes sense to combine them for simplicity. Labels should be durable and protected against damage. Leaving behind manuals and system schematics with the system is also recommended.

Power sources

The PV source or charge controller, energy storage system and inverter should all be properly labeled with a label that includes important details like power rating, maximum voltage, and maximum current. Power sources should also be identified as a hazardous source of electricity.

Disconnects

All disconnects that are used to turn off power sources should be clearly identified. Anyone should be able to identify how to turn off a PV system in case of an emergency.

Circuits

Circuits should be labeled at terminations like module connectors, combiner boxes, or distribution panels. In a distribution panel the breakers are typically labeled in order to identify the circuits. Properly labeled circuits can make troubleshooting a future issue quick and safe.
